SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
Introducing the exquisite Sgian Dubh, a classic Scottish knife featuring a black handle, now available adorned with your Clan crest in both lead-free pewter and fine sterling silver.
This stunning Sgian Dubh measures 7-1/2 inches in length and 1-3/8 inches in width, boasting a durable stainless steel blade complemented by nickel silver plated fittings. The knife's top is embellished with a choice of synthetic stones, including imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green.
Your Clan crest is beautifully encircled by an intricate belt and buckle design, with your clan motto elegantly inscribed in raised relief lettering. Historically, the chief of the Clan would grant his crest to clansmen as a token of loyalty and Clan identity. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted with remarkable detail in sterling silver, with the Clan Crest measuring 11/16" (19.5mm) in diameter.
Please be aware that this item is made to order, typically taking just a few days to craft. All Clan designs are available, and to personalize your order, simply include your Clan name in the comments section during checkout. While this Sgian Dubh is expertly crafted, it features a handle and sheath made from resin, with plated fittings. In contrast, a genuine antique Sgian Dubh with solid silver fittings can command prices upwards of $1,000. This model offers a more economical option.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The name Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, likely reflects the knife's dark appearance—early handles were frequently crafted from black bog wood, and the blades would darken over time through use and exposure.
Another theory suggests that the name relates to the concealed nature of the knife, which is why it is traditionally worn in plain sight at the top of the stocking while donning Highland attire, signaling that the wearer is among friends and harbors no ill intentions.
It's important to note that the Sgian Dubh is not, nor should it be regarded as, a weapon!
