THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"

The term Sgian Dubh, which translates from Gaelic to "Black Knife," is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance—historically, handles were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken with age and usage. Another theory suggests that its name stems from the concealed nature of this weapon, as it has traditionally been worn visibly at the top of the stocking while donning Highland attire, indicating friendship and a lack of ill intent. It is important to emphasize that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be considered a weapon.

With over 43 years of experience in the Scottish Clan crest business, our company is proud to continue creating Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our original customers.
