SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
Discover the elegance of the Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish black-handled knife, beautifully adorned with your Clan crest crafted from lead-free pewter or exquisite sterling silver.
This stunning Sgian Dubh measures 7.5 inches in length and 1.375 inches in width, featuring a stainless steel blade complemented by nickel silver plated fittings. The handle is accentuated with a choice of synthetic stones: imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green.
The Clan crest is elegantly encircled by a meticulously designed belt and buckle motif, which showcases your clan motto in raised relief lettering. Historically, the Clan chief would present this crest to clansmen as a token of loyalty and affiliation. Each piece is skillfully handcrafted in sterling silver with high attention to detail, and the Clan Crest itself measures 11/16" (19.5mm) in diameter.
Kindly note that this item is made to order, typically taking just a few days to produce. We can accommodate every Clan, so be sure to include your Clan name in the comments section when placing your order. While this Sgian Dubh is constructed with quality craftsmanship, please be aware that the handle and sheath are made from resin, and the fittings are plated. In contrast, an authentic vintage Sgian Dubh with genuine sterling silver fittings can exceed $1,000. This model is a budget-friendly alternative.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance; early handles were often intricately carved from black bog wood, and the blade would darken over time with use and age.
Another theory suggests that the name relates to the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn prominently on the leg, visible at the top of the stocking while donning Highland attire, signaling to others that the wearer is among friends and bears no harmful intent.
It is important to emphasize that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be viewed as a weapon!
