Sgian Dubh

This stunning Sgian Dubh, the traditional Scottish knife featuring a black handle, is offered with your Clan crest elegantly mounted in lead-free pewter or exquisite sterling silver.

With dimensions of 7-1/2 inches in length and 1-3/8 inches in width, this Sgian Dubh is designed with a durable stainless steel blade and nickel silver plated fittings. The knife's top is embellished with your choice of an imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green synthetic stone, adding a touch of elegance.

The Clan crest is beautifully framed by a detailed belt and buckle motif, with your Clan motto inscribed in raised relief lettering. Historically, this crest was presented by the Clan chief as a sign of loyalty and connection to the Clan. Each Sgian Dubh is meticulously handcrafted in sterling silver, with the Clan Crest measuring 11/16 inches (19.5 mm) in diameter.

Kindly note that this item is made to order, typically ready within a few days. All Clans are represented, so please remember to include your Clan name in the comments section when placing your order. While this Sgian Dubh is expertly crafted, it is important to understand that the handle and sheath are made from resin, and the fittings are plated. A genuine antique Sgian Dubh with sterling silver fittings can fetch over $1,000, making this a cost-effective alternative.

The Origin of the "Sgian Dubh"

The term *Sgian Dubh* (Gaelic for "Black Knife") is believed to derive from the knife's dark aesthetic—historically, handles were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blades would naturally darken with time and use. Another interpretation suggests that the name reflects the weapon's concealed nature. Traditionally, when wearing Highland attire, the Sgian Dubh is kept visible at the top of the stocking, symbolizing that the wearer is among friends and harbors no ill intentions.

It is essential to clarify that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be weaponry and should not be regarded as such!
