**THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"**
The term *Sgian Dubh* (Gaelic for "Black Knife") is thought to have originated from the knife’s dark appearance—early versions often featured handles carved from black bog wood, with blades that darkened over time. Another interpretation suggests the name relates to the knife’s traditional role as a concealed weapon, which is why it is typically worn in plain sight at the top of the stocking when dressed in Highland attire, indicating the wearer’s friendly intent. It is important to clarify that the Sgian Dubh is not to be regarded as a weapon.
