Understanding the Origin of the Sgian Dubh
The term "Sgian Dubh," which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is thought to reference the knife's dark coloring, as early handles were often carved from black bog wood and blades darkened over time. Alternatively, the name may signify the knife's role as a concealed weapon, traditionally worn at the top of the stocking to indicate that the wearer is among trusted company and means no harm. The Sgian Dubh serves as a traditional accessory rather than a weapon.
