The History of the Sgian Dubh
The term "Sgian Dubh," which translates to Black Knife in Gaelic, likely alludes to the knife's dark hue—historically, handles were carved from black bog wood, and the blade would darken over time with usage. An alternative interpretation suggests that the name refers to the knife's role as a concealed weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn prominently at the top of the stocking in Highland dress to signify friendship and a lack of hostile intent. The Sgian Dubh was never meant to be a weapon.
For over 43 years, our company has been committed to celebrating Scottish Clan crests, creating Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our original customers.
