The Origin of the Sgian Dubh
The name "Sgian Dubh" (Gaelic for Black Knife) likely refers to the knife’s dark appearance—early handles were carved from black bog wood, and the blade would darken with use and age. Another theory is that the name reflects the knife's nature as a concealed weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn in plain view at the top of the stocking in Highland attire to signify that the wearer is among friends and bears no ill intent. The Sgian Dubh was never intended to be a weapon.
