Sgian Dubh

This exquisite Sgian Dubh, a classic Scottish knife, features a striking black handle and is customizable with your Clan crest, available in both lead-free pewter and fine sterling silver options.

Measuring 7-1/2 inches in length and 1-3/8 inches in width, this new Sgian Dubh boasts a stainless steel blade complemented by nickel silver-plated fittings. The top is elegantly adorned with a synthetic stone, available in charming hues of imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green.

The Clan Crest is beautifully encircled by an elaborately crafted belt and buckle design, with your Clan motto showcased in raised relief. Historically, this crest was bestowed by the Clan chief as a symbol of loyalty and affiliation to the Clan. Each piece is carefully handcrafted in sterling silver, with the Clan Crest measuring 11/16 inch (19.5mm) in diameter.

While this item is made to order, it generally takes only a few days to produce. We offer crests for all Clans, and to personalize your Sgian Dubh, simply include your Clan name in the comments when placing your order. The craftsmanship of this Sgian Dubh is exceptional, although the handle and sheath are constructed from resin, and the fittings are plated. For those seeking a genuine Sgian Dubh with solid silver fittings, prices can exceed $1,000.00, making this piece an affordable alternative.

The Meaning Behind the Sgian Dubh

The term "Sgian Dubh" translates to Black Knife in Gaelic, likely referencing the knife's dark appearance—historically, handles were carved from black bog wood, and the blade would darken over time with use and age. Another interpretation suggests that the name reflects its nature as a concealed weapon, traditionally worn atop the stocking in Highland dress, signaling that the wearer is among friends and poses no threat. It is important to note that the Sgian Dubh is not to be regarded as a weapon!

With over forty years of dedication to Scottish Clan crests, our company continues to create Clan jewelry for the next generations of our original customers.
