Collection: Thompson of Thistle
Clan Thompson of Thistle
Crest Description:
The crest shows a silver thistle, the national emblem of Scotland, within a traditional belt and buckle frame. This simple but powerful design symbolizes resilience, national pride, and steadfastness — all qualities deeply rooted in Scottish heritage.
Motto:
“Pro Patria” — Latin for “For the Fatherland” or “For One’s Country.”
This motto reflects loyalty and devotion to Scotland and is a proud declaration of service and patriotism.
Clan History:
Clan Thompson, or MacTavish in Gaelic (MacThòmais), means “son of Thomas.” The Thompsons are a Lowland and Border family but share ancestral roots with the Highland MacTavishes. Over time, some branches adopted different crests and mottos, reflecting regional identities — the “Thistle” variant is especially associated with Border Thompsons and symbolizes a distinct badge of Scottish national loyalty.
Thompsons were found in many parts of Scotland, particularly in Dumfriesshire, Argyll, and the Borders, where they were known as resilient defenders and loyal soldiers. Members of the clan often served in Scottish regiments and were known for their fierce independence.
Clan Seat and Affiliations:
While not always a clan with a single centralized seat, the Thompsons have historic ties to the MacTavish clan of Argyll, and through them, to the powerful Clan Campbell. The thistle crest version was later adopted to emphasize national Scottish allegiance rather than specific Highland lineage.
Symbolism of the Crest:
The thistle represents endurance, courage, and national pride. Its sharp exterior protects a beautiful flower — much like the Scots’ spirit: proud, protective, and noble. The circular belt and buckle design indicates membership and allegiance within the clan system.
Tartan:
The Thompson tartan features a pattern of blue, green, and black with red accents — similar to that of Clan MacTavish, acknowledging their shared heritage. Variants include the “Thompson Dress” and “Thompson Red” tartans.
