🏰 Clan Sandilands History
Clan Sandilands is a distinguished Lowland Scottish clan, with origins in Clydesdale (Lanarkshire). The name “Sandilands” derives from the barony of the same name, granted to the family in the 12th century by King David I of Scotland.
The progenitor of the clan was James Sandilands, who received lands in Lanarkshire around 1348 and later married Eleanor Douglas, daughter of Sir Archibald Douglas (“the Tyneman”) — uncle to the famous Good Sir James Douglas, companion of Robert the Bruce. This marriage allied the Sandilands with one of the most powerful noble families in medieval Scotland.
The Sandilands family later acquired the lands of Calder (near Mid Calder, West Lothian) and became the Lords of Torphichen — a title still associated with the family today. The Barons of Calder became hereditary heads of the clan.
The 1st Lord Torphichen, Sir James Sandilands, was a notable figure of the 16th century Reformation, being the last Preceptor of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem (Knights Hospitaller) in Scotland. He converted to Protestantism, surrendered the Order’s lands to the Crown, and received them back as a secular barony.
🛡️ Clan Crest
Your image depicts the Clan Sandilands crest badge, which features:
-
An eagle displayed proper (wings outstretched), symbolizing courage, vision, and nobility.
-
The crest is surrounded by the traditional belt and buckle design, denoting clan membership and loyalty to the chief.
The eagle embodies both the clan’s lofty ideals and its long association with the knightly and religious orders of Scotland’s past.
💬 Clan Motto
The Latin motto encircling the crest reads:
“Spero Meliora”
(“I hope for better things” or “I look for better”)
This expresses the family’s enduring optimism, faith, and perseverance through centuries of political and religious upheaval.
👪 Clan Septs and Associated Families
Over time, the name has remained relatively unchanged. Variants include:
-
Sandilands
-
Sandylands
-
Sandiland
Some branches settled in Ayrshire, Fife, and West Lothian, and through marriages became connected with families such as the Douglases, Lindsays, and Hamiltons.
🧵 Clan Tartan
The Sandilands tartan is a distinctive and refined sett, typically composed of:
-
Dark green and navy blue base,
-
With red and black overstripes creating a dignified contrast.
It is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans, reflecting both Highland influence and Lowland restraint — a fitting symbol for this noble family.
