Clan Pringle

History
The Pringle clan, also spelled Hoppringle in early records, is one of the oldest Border families in Scotland. The name likely originates from the lands of Hoppringill in Roxburghshire, in the Scottish Borders.
The earliest recorded ancestor, Robert Hoppryngill, lived during the reign of King Alexander III in the 13th century. The Pringles became prominent landowners, knights, and defenders of the Scottish Borders, known for their loyalty to the Crown and bravery in battle.
They were hereditary keepers of the Ettrick Forest and served as loyal supporters of the House of Douglas. Their influence stretched across the Borders, with strongholds at Smailholm, Whytbank, and Torwoodlee.

Clan Crest and Motto
The clan crest displays a golden scallop shell, symbolizing pilgrimage, honor, and spiritual protection.
The motto is “Amicitia Reddit Honores,” meaning “Friendship Gives Honor.” It reflects the Pringle family’s long-standing values of loyalty, kinship, and integrity — virtues that have defined the clan for centuries.

Clan Septs
The main surname is Pringle, though early variations include Hoppringle, Hoppringill, and Pringill. These forms all belong to the same Border family and share a common heritage.

Clan Tartan
The Pringle tartan features deep tones of green, blue, and red, crossed with fine white lines.
It represents steadfastness, loyalty, and the enduring strength of the Pringle name — true to their motto, “Friendship Gives Honor.”
