Clan Preston

History
The Preston family takes its name from the lands of Preston near Midlothian, just east of Edinburgh, Scotland. The name comes from the Old English words “preost” (priest) and “tun” (farm or settlement), meaning “the priest’s town.”
The Prestons were a distinguished Lowland family, first recorded in the 12th century, when Leone de Preston held lands under King David I. Over the centuries, the Prestons became a respected noble house with estates in Craigmillar, Valleyfield, and Fentonbarns.
Sir Simon Preston of Craigmillar was a trusted ally of Mary, Queen of Scots, and his castle became one of the most important royal residences in the 16th century. The family remained prominent in Scottish history for their service, integrity, and leadership.

Clan Crest and Motto
The Preston crest depicts a winged angel in flowing robes, symbolizing purity, virtue, and divine protection.
The clan motto is “Praesto ut Praestem,” meaning “I stand ready to excel.” It represents the Preston family’s readiness to serve with honor, faith, and excellence in all things.

Clan Septs
The main surname is Preston, though related families and variations can include Prestoun and Prestone. These branches share the same origin and heritage connected to the lands near Edinburgh.

Clan Tartan
The Preston tartan features a combination of deep greens, dark blues, and crimson lines.
It symbolizes nobility, loyalty, and courage — traits that have long defined the Preston family name and its proud Scottish legacy.
