Clan Pendergast
History
The Pendergast clan traces its origins to Norman ancestry, descending from knights who came to Britain after the Norman Conquest. The name itself is derived from the lands of Prendergast in Pembrokeshire, Wales. From there, members of the family migrated north to Scotland in the 12th century, where they settled in Roxburghshire, Berwickshire, and Fife.
The Pendergasts were known for their courage and loyalty in battle. They served Scottish kings and Border lords during centuries of warfare along the Anglo-Scottish frontier. Although not one of the large Highland clans, the Pendergast family earned a lasting reputation for bravery, honor, and service to both clan and country.
Clan Crest and Motto
The Pendergast crest depicts a griffin (half-dragon, half-cock) standing proudly — a symbol of vigilance, valor, and unwavering spirit.
The clan motto is “Pro Gens et Patria,” meaning “For Clan and Country.” It represents the Pendergasts’ enduring dedication to their kin, their homeland, and their principles.
Clan Septs
Variations of the name include Prendergast, Pendergrass, and Penderghast. These families share the same Norman origin and Scottish lineage, appearing across both Scotland and Ireland.
Clan Tartan
Although there is no specific tartan officially registered to the Pendergast name, families of Norman-Scottish descent often adopted tartans connected to their home regions. The Pendergasts are traditionally associated with the Borders district tartans, reflecting their historic homeland and loyalty to Scotland.
