Clan Oliphant

History
The Oliphant clan traces its noble roots back to Norman ancestry, descending from the name Olifard, which appeared in Scotland in the 12th century. The first recorded ancestor, David de Olifard, was granted lands for his loyal service to King David I of Scotland.
Over the centuries, the Oliphants established themselves as one of the prominent families of Perthshire and the Mearns. They held estates at Aberdalgie, Dupplin, and Kellie Castle, and played influential roles in the nation’s history — from the Wars of Independence to the Jacobite uprisings.
Though the hereditary title of Lord Oliphant is now dormant, the family’s name remains a proud symbol of loyalty, leadership, and Scottish heritage.

Clan Crest and Motto
The Oliphant clan crest depicts a unicorn’s head couped argent, armed and maned in gold — representing purity, strength, and nobility of spirit.
The clan motto is “A Tout Pouvoir,” meaning “To do everything possible” or “Provide for all.” This reflects the courage, ambition, and perseverance that have long defined the Oliphant name.

Clan Septs
Recognized surname variations include Oliphant, Oliphent, Olifard, and Olifart. These forms appeared across Scotland as the family expanded and established branches in different regions.

Clan Tartan
The Oliphant tartan is characterized by rich greens, blues, and soft red over-checks — representing loyalty, harmony, and resilience.
It is worn proudly by those of Oliphant descent and by all who honor the clan’s enduring legacy of faithfulness and strength.
