Clan Ogilvie

History
The Ogilvie (or Ogilvy) clan takes its name from the lands of Ogilvy in Angus, Scotland. The family originated in the 12th century, when the lands were granted to the son of the Earl of Angus. By the 14th century, the Ogilvies had become one of the most powerful families in eastern Scotland, serving as hereditary Sheriffs of Angus.
Throughout history, the Ogilvies were known for their loyalty to the Scottish crown and their courage in battle. Members of the family fought bravely during the Wars of Independence and later became active supporters of the Stuart cause during the Jacobite risings.
The Ogilvies produced several noble titles, including the Earls of Airlie, one of the most distinguished branches of the clan.

Clan Crest and Motto
The clan crest depicts a lady from the waist upward, dressed in blue, holding a red portcullis (gate) — a symbol of strength, defense, and nobility.
The clan motto is “A Fin”, meaning “To the end.” It expresses the Ogilvies’ steadfast loyalty, courage, and perseverance through every challenge.

Clan Septs
Associated names and variations include Ogilvie, Ogilvy, Ogilby, MacGilchrist, Gilchrist, Storrie, Storey, and Richardson. These families historically shared allegiance or lineage with the Ogilvie clan.

Clan Tartan
The Ogilvie tartan appears in several styles — Ancient, Modern, Hunting, and Airlie. It is characterized by deep blues, greens, and reds, representing both the Angus landscape and the proud heritage of the clan.
The tartan stands as a lasting symbol of honor, unity, and devotion — true to the clan’s motto, “To the end.”
