Clan Nisbet

History
The Nisbet family takes its name from the lands of Nesbit in Berwickshire, in the southeast of Scotland. The name itself comes from the Old English words “nes” meaning “nose” (a headland or promontory) and “byht” meaning “bend,” referring to the shape of the original estate.
The earliest recorded ancestor was Adam Nisbet, who lived during the reign of King Alexander III (13th century). The family became influential landowners and knights, with strong connections to the Borders and the Scottish Lowlands.
By the 15th and 16th centuries, several branches of the clan had formed, including the Nisbets of Dirleton and Nisbet House in East Lothian. They were known for their loyalty to the Scottish crown and their military service in defense of the realm.

Clan Crest and Motto
The Nisbet crest features a boar passant sable (black boar walking), symbolizing courage, determination, and strength.
The clan motto is “I Byde It,” meaning “I endure it.” This motto reflects the steadfast and resilient character of the Nisbet family — enduring hardship with strength and honor.

Clan Septs
Common variations of the Nisbet name include Nesbit, Nesbitt, Nisbett, and Nisbet. These forms are found throughout Scotland and beyond, especially in the Borders region.

Clan Tartan
The Nisbet tartan features rich shades of green and blue, crossed with red and white lines.
It represents balance, endurance, and pride in one’s heritage — true to the motto “I Byde It.” The tartan is worn by descendants and supporters of the Nisbet name as a mark of loyalty and resilience.
