Clan Nairn

History
The name Nairn (or Nairne) is of territorial origin, derived from the ancient town of Nairn on the Moray Firth in Scotland. The earliest known record of the family dates to the 14th century, with Adam de Narryn mentioned as a chaplain in Inverness in 1361.
Over the following centuries, the Nairn families were established in several parts of Scotland, especially in Perthshire and Fife. They were respected landowners and loyal supporters of the Scottish crown.
Although the clan today is considered armigerous (without a currently recognized chief), the Nairn family remains an enduring part of Scotland’s noble history and heritage.

Clan Crest and Motto
The Nairn clan crest displays a celestial globe on a stand, symbolizing knowledge, exploration, and vision beyond limits.
The motto is “Plus Ultra,” meaning “More beyond this.” It represents ambition, discovery, and the pursuit of greater purpose — values that reflect the forward-thinking spirit of the Nairn family.

Clan Septs
The clan has few recorded septs, but the main surnames include Nairn and Nairne. Some family branches are historically associated with the wider Clan MacKintosh and the Chattan Confederation.

Clan Tartan
The Nairn tartan is a beautiful pattern of green, navy, and red tones — representing harmony, courage, and the Scottish landscape itself.
It is worn proudly by those who carry the Nairn name or trace their lineage to this noble and thoughtful Highland family.
