Clan Morrison

Clan History

Clan Morrison (MacGhilleMhoire in Gaelic) traces its roots to the Outer Hebrides, especially the Isle of Lewis and Harris. The Morrisons of Ness were hereditary brieves (judges) of Lewis, holding authority over law and governance on the island. Other Morrison families are found in Harris and Uist, and there is also a tradition that the clan descends from the Norse-Gaelic rulers of the Western Isles.
The clan played an important role in island society, often acting as mediators and leaders in times of dispute. Over time, the Morrisons spread to the Scottish mainland and beyond, establishing themselves as an influential family both in law and trade.

Clan Crest

The crest depicts a hand holding a dagger emerging from a blue and green mount surmounted by a stone tower, supported by a wreath. This symbolizes justice and strength, reflecting the Morrison tradition of hereditary judges on Lewis.
On the badge shown in your image, the hand and dagger are prominent above the tower, reminding of the clan’s authority and readiness to defend law and order.

Clan Motto

"Teaghlach Phabbay" — translated as “The Family of Pabbay”.
This refers to the island of Pabbay in the Outer Hebrides, a historic seat of one branch of the Morrisons, emphasizing the unity of the kin-group and its Hebridean origins.
