Clan Mercer

Crest Badge: A heron’s head holding a serpent in its beak.
Motto: “Ye Great Pule” (The Great Pool).

History

The Mercers are an ancient Lowland Scottish family whose name derives from the Old French mercier meaning “merchant.” The earliest records date back to the 12th century, when they appear in Perthshire and Fife as prosperous burgesses and traders.

During the Wars of Scottish Independence, Sir Andrew Mercer of Perth supported Robert the Bruce and distinguished himself in battle. The family later held considerable influence in Perthshire, especially around Aldie and Innerpeffray.

Though primarily associated with commerce, the Mercers were also a military family, providing knights and men-at-arms in Scotland’s struggles against England.

Crest Symbolism

  • The heron represents vigilance and determination. Herons were seen as patient hunters, always watchful by the water’s edge.

  • The serpent in its beak symbolizes triumph over danger and cunning enemies.

  • Together, the image conveys the clan’s reputation for both prudence and strength.

Motto

“Ye Great Pule” is thought to reference the waters and marshes of Perthshire, perhaps alluding to the family’s original lands or to the heron’s natural hunting grounds.

Lands

The Mercers held estates in Perthshire and Fife, including Aldie and Innerpeffray. Their descendants spread across Lowland Scotland and became established merchants and professionals in Edinburgh and beyond.

Present Day

Clan Mercer is recognized as an armigerous clan (without a current chief acknowledged by the Lord Lyon King of Arms). Nevertheless, the crest and motto remain powerful emblems of the family’s heritage.
