Clan Melville

Crest: A ratch-hound’s head erased, collared.
Motto: “Denique Coelum” (Heaven at last).

History

The Melville Clan takes its name from the barony of Maleville in Normandy, from which the family came over to Scotland during the reign of David I (1124–1153). The earliest known ancestor, Galfridus de Maleville, was granted lands in Midlothian, and the family quickly established themselves among the Scottish nobility.

Through the centuries, the Melvilles were prominent landholders in Fife and Mid-Lothian. Several branches of the family held important offices in Scottish government and military service. One of the most notable figures was Sir James Melville of Halhill (1535–1617), a distinguished diplomat and memoirist, whose writings remain a key source for understanding the politics of the 16th century.

The clan later acquired the title of Earls of Melville in the 17th century, cementing their place among the leading Scottish noble houses.

Crest & Motto

  • The clan crest is a hound’s head (a ratch-hound), a symbol of loyalty, vigilance, and service.

  • The motto “Denique Coelum” (Heaven at last) reflects a spiritual aspiration and perseverance.

Tartan

The Melville tartan features green and blue with black and red overstripes, a striking design that links the family to the Lowlands but retains a Highland dignity.

Seat

The historic seat of the Melville family is Melville Castle, near Edinburgh, a fine 18th-century building that stands on the site of earlier medieval fortifications.
