MacFarlane Clan — History, Crest, Motto, Septs, Tartan

Celebrate your MacFarlane heritage with authentic details drawn from Scottish tradition.

History & Origins

The MacFarlane clan descends from the ancient royal house of Alpin, making them kin to the MacGregors and other clans of that line. Their name comes from Parlan, a Gaelic form of Bartholomew. The MacFarlanes settled around Loch Lomond and became known as fierce Highland warriors, often involved in conflicts with their powerful neighbors, the Colquhouns and Buchanans. Though outlawed at times for their raiding, the MacFarlanes’ loyalty to Scotland and their distinguished service in wars of independence and later conflicts cemented their proud legacy.

Crest & Motto

  • Crest: A demi-savage brandishing a broad sword

  • Motto: This I’ll Defend

  • Badge etiquette: Clansfolk display the crest within a strap-and-buckle belt, signifying loyalty to the chief.
