MacDougall Clan — History, Crest, Motto, Septs, Tartan

Celebrate your MacDougall heritage with authentic details drawn from Scottish tradition.

History & Origins

Clan MacDougall descends directly from Somerled, King of the Isles, through his son Dougall, from whom the name derives. In Gaelic, MacDhùghaill means “son of Dougall.” Centered in Argyll, the MacDougalls were Lords of Lorn, ruling from Dunollie Castle near Oban. They were powerful sea-lords of the west coast, controlling lands and sea routes along the Hebrides. Fierce rivals of the Clan Donald, the MacDougalls supported the Balliol cause during the Wars of Independence, and though they suffered setbacks, they endured as one of the most historically significant clans of the western Highlands.

Crest & Motto

  • Crest: A hand in armor holding a red cross crosslet.

  • Motto: Buaidh no bas — “Victory or death.”

  • Badge etiquette: Clansfolk wear the crest within a strap-and-buckle design, displaying the motto.

Septs and associated surnames include Dougall, Dowall, Dowell, Dool, Doyle, McDougal, McDougald, and related spellings.
