MacDonald of Glengarry — History, Crest, Motto, Septs, Tartan

Celebrate your Glengarry heritage with authentic details drawn from Scottish Highland tradition.

History & Origins

The MacDonalds of Glengarry are one of the most distinguished branches of Clan Donald, tracing their ancestry to Alasdair Carrach, son of John of Islay, Lord of the Isles. Based in the wild lands of Glengarry in Inverness-shire, they became famed as warriors and staunch defenders of Gaelic culture. The Glengarry chiefs were deeply involved in Highland and Jacobite history, rallying their clansmen during the uprisings of 1715 and 1745. Their historic stronghold was Invergarry Castle, a seat that came to symbolize their power and resilience.

Crest & Motto

  • Crest: A raven perched upon a rock proper

  • Motto: Cragan an Fhithich — “The Rock of the Raven”

  • Badge Etiquette: The crest is encircled by a strap-and-buckle bearing the motto, worn by clansfolk to demonstrate loyalty to the chief.

Septs & Associated Names

Septs and associated surnames of the Glengarry branch include MacDonnell, MacDonell, McDaniel, McConnell, Donaldson, and other variants. Many of these names remain common in the Highlands, Canada, and other parts of the diaspora.

Tartan

  • MacDonald of Glengarry Tartans: Distinctive patterns exist for the Glengarry branch, including Glengarry Modern, Ancient, and Weathered versions. These are part of the wider family of MacDonald tartans but reflect the individuality of this Highland branch.

  • Traditionally used in kilts, plaids, and accessories, the tartans are a proud statement of Glengarry identity.

How to Wear

  • Wear the Glengarry crest badge alongside the clan tartan for Highland games, weddings, and formal events.

  • Tartans and crests appear on kilts, shawls, ties, and sashes, making them ideal for expressing heritage in both traditional and modern settings.
