MacAlister Clan — History, Crest, Motto, Septs, Tartan

Celebrate your MacAlister heritage with authentic details drawn from Scottish tradition.

History & Origins
The MacAlister clan descends from Alasdair Mòr, son of Donald of Islay and grandson of Somerled, the great 12th-century Lord of the Isles. This makes the MacAlisters a distinguished branch of the powerful Clan Donald. The clan held lands in Kintyre and around Tarbert, with later branches settling in Bute and Antrim in Ireland. As part of Clan Donald’s extended family, the MacAlisters share deep roots in the western Highlands and the Hebrides.

Crest & Motto
Crest: A right hand holding a dagger Proper
Motto: Fortiter — “Boldly”
Badge etiquette: Clansfolk wear the chief’s crest within a strap-and-buckle displaying the motto.

Septs & Associated Names
